THINK of something sweet — think of making Bertie Bassett mayor for the day.
Every sweet-tooth's mouthwatering dream changed places with Hatherleigh's town mayor Dennis Bater on Friday — and made history.
The multicoloured Mr Bassett sweet-talked his way into town and borrowed Mr Bater's chain of office.
Next Mayor Bassett put a smile on everyone's faces by changing the name of Bassett's Cross — at the junction of the A386 and B3216 — to Bassett's Happy.
In fact, everyone was happy — Bertie Bassett in his new civic role was happy, local children who turned out to watch the renaming were happy to meet their licorice allsorts hero — and Mr Bater was happy.
'I was quite delighted to pass over my chain of office and let Bertie be mayor for a day. If it helps the area after what we have gone through that's great because any publicity we can get is good,' said Mr Bater.
He praised Bertie saying he 'did a good job'.
'I think a mayor should be light-hearted enough to do things like this to help the area. We are here to serve everyone.'
In fact, Dennis Bater enjoyed his colourful companion's company so much he has invited him back. Bertie has been offered the opportunity to be mayor for the day again on Saturday, November 10 as special guest at Hatherleigh Town Carnival.
Mr Bater is hoping if he can persuade Bertie to make another celebrity visit there could be a chance of some tasty sponsorship for the carnival.
Now that is a seriously sweet idea . . .
