BERE Alston Bowling Club were host to the Top Club area finalists Topsham BC from Devon and Carnon Downs BC from Cornwall. Topsham lost the four and two-wood singles matches. Pairs and triples were trailing badly with the rink noticeably down 11-21 after 12 ends. Then the Carnon Down triple lost by a considerable margin and a dramatic finish on the rink saw Topsham home with a 26-21 victory. The match now tied at 2-2 would be decided by the pairs. Going into the last end Carnon Downs led by four shots. With only two woods left to play Topsham conceded leaving Carnon Downs the victors by 3 - 2. Back in the clubhouse both teams praised Bere Alston for the high standard of the playing surface. Chairman Ken Bellchambers said: ?Our green is beginning to get the recognition that it deserves. We have had a ladies? county match at the start of the season and there are men?s county games to come later this year. In August we have the section seven final of the Devon County Trophy. All the credit must go to our green team led by Phil Barden. We must also pay tribute to Dudley Maaz who sadly passed away a year ago but his knowledge and dedication laid the foundations of what we have here today?.
