Tavistock 3
Chudleigh 1
TAVISTOCK men's hockey club fought their way to a well-deserved victory in a very competitive match.
They dominated early exchanges with a series of short corners which were unconverted and numerous other scoring opportunities.
Chudleigh were always dangerous on the break and against the run of play were awarded a penalty flick after a defensive infringement. Martin Osborne, playing one of his best games this season, saved the penalty to keep all square after the first quarter.
The deadlock was broken when John Barrett scored the opening goal with a well placed shot, his fourth of the season.
The game continued end to end with better controlled play by Tavistock but Chudleigh equalised after 30 minutes with a powerful strike from a short corner.
The second half continued in the same attacking vein with either side capable of taking the match.
The networking style of Tavistock bore fruit with a guest appearance from Shane Lovett, good interplay between himself and Carl Jefferies culminated in a nicely taken goal by Lovett.
The result was made emphatic when a typical centre forward strike was put away by the re-emerging Ricky Bellard.
This week Tavistock entertain North Devon at home in their build-up to a final show-down against Isca on April 1.
Tavistock 2nd XI 3
Chudleigh 2nd XI 3
TAVISTOCK Hockey Club travelled to Chudleigh with only nine men, but Chudleigh lent them a player to make the numbers up to ten.
Early in the game Jones, playing on the right wing, put Tavistock ahead with a good shot from a fine angle.
This unsettled the Tavistock defence and soon they were losing 3-1 when mistakes by Thornton, Wills and Moyse all led to goals. After this horror period everyone settled down with Wills pushing up into the midfield to help the depleted attack.
After half time Tavistock began to build attacks with Young distributing well to Glanville and Ralph.
Tavistock scored a second goal when Newman snr drove into the D and passed the ball to Newman jnr who deflected it into the net.
With only a minute to go, Ralph coolly flicked the ball over the oncoming goal keeper's head into the gaol for the equaliser.
