AT Plymouth and District Badminton League?s end of season restricted tournament BATs Badminton Club acquitted themselves well by winning a number of trophies.
In the ladies? singles Susie Povey won the overall title with Frances Ward taking the runners-up place. With the entry to the ladies? singles down a little on previous years it was left to a number of other players from BATs to be the real challenges to Susie and Frances.
Becky Ward gave Susie a scare in the round robin stages when she took the first seven points off her and in the end it was by only two points that her older sister Frances went through to the final.
In the ladies? (divisions 2 and 3) competition Susie Povey partnered Frances Ward and they cruised through to the final by not dropping a game.
In the other half of the draw Becky Ward, partnering a Devon junior county colleague, played well to get through to the semi-finals.
Lizzie Rae and Celia Williams worked hard all the way through the round robin stages but had no luck with getting any further.
In the men?s (divisions 2 and 3) competition James Cooper was determined to hold onto the trophy that he had won with his brother Julian the previous year. This year he partnered Alan Berry and in the round robin stages they started off comfortably by taking the first three matches 15-1, 15-1, 15-4.
They then came up against a much stronger pair and narrowly lost 14-15. They had done enough though to reach the final where they were to prove their strength and experience with a 15-9, 15-11 win.
Also in the men?s competition were David Williams and Mike Ward and they frightened a few more experienced pairs by taking points off them.
In the mixed (divisions 2 and 3) competition every member of the BATs league team was entered. With some changes to the normal pairings only James Cooper and Frances Ward progressed through to the knockout stages where, in the semi-final, they came up against an ex-BATs player.
The semi-final proved to be wearing on both pairings but in the end James and Frances came through. In the final they came up against the current trophy holders Jo Turns and James Hurrell. Having never beaten the pair, James and Frances started out a little tentative but gained in confidence.
The deciding game of the final was taken by James and Frances and they are the first BATs pair to take the doubles trophy.
At the end BATs came away with four of the five top trophies being competed for and with all their players feeling they had had a successful tournament.
