AFTER an impressive 8-1 victory over YMCA Kitto the previous week, Torpoint were looking to avenge the 9-0 defeat away to the BATS B team earlier on in the season. The Torpoint victory against YMCA Kitto had given the BATS team new heart as they now had a game in hand over their nearest rivals in division 5 of the Plymouth and District Badminton league.

In the men's doubles rubbers Torpoint started well with a comfortable win . Paul Bitton and Mike Ward failed to settle quickly in either of the games when they lost 15-6, 15-7.

In the second men's doubles rubber Paul Bitton and Ewen Rae got off to the best start when Torpoint let them get away to a 10-0 lead. The Torpoint pair did not recover from this and Paul and Ewen took the rubber 15-8, 15-10.

In the third rubber Ewen Rae made his experience count and along with Mike Ward they dominated the younger Torpoint pair to take the rubber 15-4, 15-10.

The BATS B ladies continued their domination in division 5 with a three-rubber win. In the first ladies' doubles rubber Frances Ward and Elizabeth Rae played with confidence and were never in serious trouble, winning 15-9, 15-5.

In the second rubber Frances Ward and Tamsin Woodroffe produced a fine first game to demonstrate the importance of serving well to take it convincingly 15-1. Torpoint ladies put up a spirited fight in the second game, but could not find any weaknesses to exploit and and in the end the BATS pair took the rubber 15-11. The third ladies' doubles rubber demonstrated the dominance of the BATS players when Elizabeth Rae and Tamsin Woodroffe took it comfortably 15-9, 15-3.

The mixed doubles rubbers confirmed BATS dominance of the evening with all three rubbers going their way. The first mixed doubles saw Paul Bitton and Frances Ward play the only three-game rubber of the match when they lost the first game 14-17. Paul and Frances then settled and took the next two games almost too easily 15-5, 15-4. In the second mixed doubles rubber Ewen Rae and Tamsin Woodroffe maintained their 100% record in the mixed, with a 15-7, 15-10 win. Mike Ward and Elizabeth Rae rounded off the evening with a more than comfortable 15-1, 15-2 win.

At the end of the evening the result was good for the BATS B team by taking them to the top of division 5.

Torpoint were left to lick their wounds and hope the renovation of the hall will bring them better luck.
