GOLDEN jubilee plans for Sampford Spiney include a barbecue — which sounds so appetising that wildlife has tucked into the detail, say organisers.

Churchwarden and organiser Ros Spedding said a flier in the church porch had been nibbled by slugs and snails. 'But the only bit they've eaten completely is the detail about the barbecue — it shows they have good taste,' she said.

Events start on Sunday afternoon, June 2, with a special service of thanksgiving open to all at 3pm in St Mary's church.

On Monday afternoon the gardens of the village open from 2pm to 5pm and Devon cream teas will be served — including at Sampford Manor, one-time home of Sir Francis Drake. Children's games start with a painted face competition at 4.30 on Pew Tor above the village.

A family treasure hunt kicks off at 4.30pm, starting and finishing at the tor-top barbecue site. This will delve into the history of the parish, including the turf war between the ladies of the parish and those of neighbouring Whitchurch.

People are requested to bring their own picnics or barbecue favourites and use the facilities on Pew Tor from 6.30pm, where there will be a bonfire with a perfect view of fireworks in Tavistock and Plymouth and of beacons after sunset.

Visitors are asked to pay £1 per person, which will cover entry to all gardens. A detailed schedule of events is available at £1 from Ros Spedding on 01822 853442 or John Pugh on 01822 855000.
