CALLINGTON Town Band has had a great start to the New Year with a £500 grant from the Co-op's Community Fund. The money will buy a new glockenspiel for the band, which is one of six groups in the Caradon area to secure donations totalling £2,139 from the fund. Other grants will help pay for the setting up of a film society in Looe, provide activities for the disabled in Liskeard and buy a new shed for a playgroup in Landulph. The Co-op's community fund is part of the Co-operative Group's membership share of profits scheme which allows members to donate all or part of their twice-yearly payouts to worthy causes. Grants between £100 and £5,000 are allocated, based on a set of values and principles such as social responsibility and caring for others. About £100,000 is available annually to support charities and community groups in the region.
