A BID for Heritage Lottery funding to refurbish Tavistock?s Victorian bandstand in the Meadows is being made by young musicians in the town.

The Stannary Youth Brass Band has estimated it will cost between £40,000 and £60,000 to modernise the bandstand or go for a complete rebuild.

The bandstand is currently underused and one of the reasons for this is believed to be that it is too small to accommodate today?s bands with their large percussion sections.

Band members are currently drumming up support for their bid to submit with the application to the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Musical director of the Stannary Brass Band Peter Jones said it was very early days: ?We have no idea how successful the bid will be because the money available is more for renovation of buildings than for things like bandstands.

?There is no disabled access to the bandstand at the moment which rules out band members who are in wheelchairs and it could be larger.

?We feel a better facility might encourage more people to use it.?

Tavistock Town Council has supported the funding application and it is hoped West Devon Borough Council will follow suit.

Mr Jones is also chairman of Tavistock Music Live, a new committee set up to promote live music in the town.

Tavistock?s Stannary Youth Brass Band has 47 members, the majority of whom are under eleven.
