CADETS from 2312 squadron in Tavistock received their silver and bronze awards from the regional commandant, group captain Mike Remlinger recently, on his inspection of the successful squadron.

Cpt Remlinger said he was most impressed with the facilities offered to all cadets, with skills demonstrated in hot air balloon model flying, woodworking, robotics, flight and air traffic control simulators.

The inspection took place as 2312 Tavistock squadron was selected as the best in the Plymouth and Cornwall Wing for its academic, adventure training, flying and Duke of Edinburgh activities.

Commanding officer Flt Lt Phil Newcombe said a lot of effort had been put into this inspection by both the cadets and the staff and all were now looking forward to greater successes this year.

Flt Lt Newcombe said: 'We are keen to recruit 13 year old boys and girls into our cadet ranks who are interested in life skills, aviation and teamwork.

'The DofE scheme is an excellent route to follow. In the last 12 months cadets have achieved three gold , nine silver and  five bronze awards.

'Academically we have seen several cadets achieving BTEC awards giving all the edge for further higher education places on top of their respective school achievements.'

Flt Lt Newcombe said the squadron's flying achievements had seen the highest gliding scholarships awarded in the squadron's history.

'We welcome parents and interested teenagers to visit the squadron on any Tuesday evening,' he said.

The cadet centre is off Pixon Lane on the side road  by Kings and the Squash club.
