The finals of the South West of England Open Winter Foursomes competition, sponsored by Wolferstans Solicitors, were played at Yelverton Golf Club on Sunday. The competition had started in October, with 74 pairs competing, including 13 professionals and seven ladies. The final was played over 36 holes, in beautiful sunny weather, a change to the normal gale force winds and horizontal rain. The final was between Ashley and Martin Moon and Adam Bridgewater and Joe Yorke, both previous winners of the competition. The Moon team started well, with three birdies in the first five holes, and were four up after the first nine holes. Bridgewater and Yorke came back but by lunch the Moons were two up. After lunch fortunes fluctuated and Bridgewater and Yorke came back to win the second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth to take the lead for the first time. But by the 14th Bridgewater and Yorke were four up, only to lose the 15th following a magnificent second shot from Ashley. The match was finalised on the 17th after Adam hit his tee shot to four feet for a 'birdie'. The overall result was a win for the last year's winners by 3 and 1. As a consolation Ashley Moon was the winner of the £1,000 professional prize. The Plate final saw local pair Dave Garry and Dave Purnell (Yelverton) take on Andrew Pilcher and John Breading from Exeter, but the visitors were far too strong and took the honours with a convincing victory. The trophies were presented by James Walsh from Wolferstans, the competition sponsors. Local Professional Tim McSherry took the third professional prize, with Adam Bridgewater and Joe Yorke accepting the trophy and prize vouchers for a second successive year.
