THINGS are adding up just a little better at Okehampton Primary School for both parents and pupils — thanks to the sum efforts of all those involved in a popular maths course.
Parents of children in Years 3 and 4 have been taking part in a ten-week Family Learning numeracy course — which has been held every Thursday morning.
Cindy Squire, the Family Learning tutor, has been running the course along with teacher Catherine Gee.
She said: 'The aim is to help parents understand how their children are taught maths in school. In doing so, when children come home with their homework, parents are now in a better position to help them.
'They learn how the children do it and not necessarily the way they were taught to do it when they were at school.'
Cindy said 14 parents have taken up the course and some are enjoying it so much they are taking an adult numeracy test.
Headteacher Brian Cunningham added: 'It has been very successful.
'It is lovely to see how positive it is for parents in boosting their own confidence in maths and at the same time being able to support their children.
'It has also been a great way for mothers to socialise and make new friends.'
