A FIRE in the Arcade, in Okehampton, which broke out in the early hours of Tuesday morning, was started deliberately when a bag of rubbish was set alight.
Firefighters were called out at 2.30am on Tuesday after rubbish piled against a doorway in the Arcade was set on fire.
Two fire appliances from Okehampton attended the scene and found the arcade was filling with smoke. The fire was extinguished with hose-reels but damage had already been caused to a hoarding.
Okehampton station officer Ian Donovan made a request to shop owners in the Arcade to take care not to let rubbish accumulate outside the front of their premises and where possible to store rubbish bags inside or out of sight of potential arsonists.
