Devon and Exeter Premier League Okehampton 7 Heavitree Social United 3 AFTER defeat, away to Feniton, Argyle were determined to get back to winning ways in this pre-Christmas game— and this they did in style. Heavitree started by playing the better football and soon had Argyle defending deep in their own penalty area. Early on Heavitree won a corner and took the lead when the ball came off the back of their striker at the near post and into the net. Okehampton responded when Ian Sercombe picked the ball up in his own half and ran at the Heavitree defence, hitting a good shot that was turned around the post by the keeper. From the resulting corner Argyle levelled the score when Robert Miller blasted in a volley from the back of the area. Argyle lost Mark Bardus with a calf injury just before the interval and brought on Chris Wills to play on the right flank, switching Philip Evans to the centre of midfield. Just before the interval Heavitree had a slice of good fortune resulting in Argyle scrambling the ball away only to see it fired straight back to a striker that was flagged for offside — the referee consulted with the linesman, overruled his decision and Heavitree went back into the lead. Okehampton started the second half by pushing Heavitree back deep in their own half and forcing several corners — one of which resulted in an own goal to level the scores. Within minutes Argyle were in the lead when Chris Wills whipped in a cross and Robbie Miller headed home superbly. Heavitree responded by winning a free kick just outside the Argyle area; the ball was played short and a powerful shot from 18 yards levelled the scores. On 75 minutes it was Argyle's turn to win a free kick. The ball was floated to the back post and defender Tim Williams scored with a good, clean header. Argyle really needed a cushion of two goals to be sure of the points and achieved this aim when Steve Williams won a good challenge in the centre of midfield, played in Steve Kinsey, who finished calmly by stroking the ball past the keeper to make it 5-3. Argyle were not finished and further pressure saw Heavitree's Gary Webb put through his own net to make it 6-3. Adam Mortimer, who has been struggling with injury for most of the season, came on to complete the scoring for Argyle and round off a superb victory.
