Devon two league North Tawton 53 Plymouth Argaum 0 Within the first five minutes at Taw Meadows the Tawton scrum had shoved the Argaum pack off its own ball in a set scrum. Captain Andy Pyle laid back a good ball from the pile up and flanker Richard Lethbridge broke away to sprint to the line. This try was converted by David Fewings. Within minutes a penalty chip to the corner set up a Tawton line out close to the Argaum line. A good take and drive was held up briefly on the line but Lethbridge burrowed through to score his second try. Although the conversion was missed, North Tawton were 12-0 up. Argaum came back gamely and pinned the Tawton side back into their own half for a period. With the exchange of several kicks the game was evenly contested but Argaum were unable to take any advantage and penetrate the defence. The stalemate was broken by a blind side break off a scrum which released left wing Alfie May on the outside. He blitzed the defending number eight and broke free to feed a pass to fly half Fewings who ran in the try. The conversion just shaved the right hand upright, leaving the score at 17-0. Almost immediately the Tawton side was back in the attack as the nine-ten axis of Gyde and Fewings was able to dictate the play, benefiting from the dominance of their pack. A strong run down the right wing by full back Simon Quick led to the ball being fed inside to scrum half Peter Gyde who just made it to the line despite a last ditch tackle. Once again the conversion was missed, and it was 22-0 to the home side at the break. In the interval a back row change was made by North Tawton as Steve King came on to replace Mike Young. Argaum were almost immediately back on the defensive as they were forced back behind their try line. The front row of Pete Wonnacott, Adam Davis and Tom Phillips were again setting a high standard of play, spearheading the drive of their pack. The first try of the second period came from a beautiful break from a set scrum, the ball going along the line to outside centre Keith Jones. He broke the line at a perfect angle and timed his pass out to Simon Quick perfectly for the full back to go in for a try. This was converted by Fewings to move the score on to 29-0. The next score again involved Jones in his outside centre role, and once again his line and pass were very effective, this time to put right wing Shami Kotecha in for a try in the right corner. A scrum close to the Argaum line gave the Tawton scrum the chance of another score, this one a fine individual effort by number eight Peters. He powered through the straggling defence to score and give Fewings an easier target for a successful conversion. The next try came from a ball from a set scrum in the middle of the park which was fed efficiently out to Gyde. He found Fewings running the ideal line to cut through the Argaum defence and go over for his second try. A mistake by Argaum close to their line gave Tawton another chance but the defence this time was solid and the visitors pushed play back out to their 22 metre line. This was not enough however, and Peters again broke off the back of a set scrum and, with support from prop Phillips, pushed the home side back into an attacking position. Fittingly it was Peters who completed the move as he again broke free and drove through for his second try. Fewings closed off the match with a final conversion and a 53-0 win was sealed.
