A LEGACY of approximately £300,000 has assured the future of the Dartmoor Archive. The archive was established in November 2003 by the Dartmoor Trust, and there are currently 6337 images of the moors and surrounding area on its website at http://www.ex.ac.uk/dartmoor-archive">www.ex.ac.uk/dartmoor-archive A spokesperson for the trust said the legacy had been left by the late Peter Hirst, ?a man who knew and loved Dartmoor?. She said: ?This legacy means the future is now assured so that the archive can be targetted to be used by a wide range of ages, from primary school children to older people.? Peter Hirst visited Dartmoor as a young man, with his father. He developed an understanding and knowledge of the moor, and rebuilt a small cottage near Dartmeet enabling him to come and live on the moor. Mr Hirst led guided walks for Dartmoor National Park and developed an interest in mining on the moors, carrying out extensive research into the mines at Brimpts and writing a book on the subject. He helped restore an old water wheel which can be visited on a walk designed by him round the mining area. His ashes were scattered at Yar Tor and there is a stone engraved PH 1931-2004 at the place he used to rest on his walk.
