WHAT a pleasant change to read a letter (February 18) being complimentary to Waitrose instead of the recent spate of whingeing about such impending disasters as the loss of the disgusting toilets in Market Place, which will not now be of any inconvenience (sorry!), the re-siting of the fair, which as been advocated for many years anyway, and incredibly, the fact that petrol may be fractionally dearer than in other towns, which when the new store is open will probably not be the case.
Councillor Beryl Salt states that the Co-op did not bother to reply to a letter sent last November regarding their policy on selling genetically modified foods but Waitrose replied with detailed information.
Last June I wrote to both companies regarding their policy on free range pork and poultry. From the Co-op I got two paragraphs stating they did not stock such pork and whilst they stocked poultry it was not available at the Okehampton branch.
From Waitrose I got a very detailed four-page letter regarding these items which are available in all their stores and further comprehensive information regarding all their meat products.
In the customer services department it appears to be no contest.
In another letter of the aforementioned type the question was asked, will Okehampton ever learn? I am confident it has, and your letter-heading 'Lucky Okehampton, getting a Waitrose' is an entirely accurate description of our good fortune.
