KEYS to the newly built Lamerton Sports and Community Centre were officially handed over recently, after years of fundraising for the new facility. The project to build the centre on the Recreational Field in Lamerton finally came to fruition when Valerie Hill, chairperson for Lamerton Parish Hall Committee, accepted the keys. During the ceremony Mrs Hill paid tribute to the committee members and friends, and to organisations, groups, businesses and individuals for their support over the years. Mrs Hill said almost £63,000 had been raised locally — an incredible achievement for such a small rural community. The centre includes a multi-purpose main hall, meeting rooms, store, well-equipped kitchen, and up-to-date changing and toilet facilities. Outside is an enclosed children's play area with car parking space. There will be an extended coffee morning and open day this Saturday, February 24, in the new centre from 10am to 4pm with an extended invitation for members of the public to have a look around. Mrs Hill expressed thanks to all the organisations which helped fund the project, including Lamerton Parish Council, West Devon Borough Council, Devon County Council (Education Department), DEFRA and EAGGF (Rural Enterprise Scheme), Devon Renaissance, Biffaward and Pennon Environmental Funds, both managed trough SWEET UK, Community Council of Devon, Barclays and WestDEN.
