VISITORS from far and wide flocked to Tavistock on Sunday for the 26th annual Robey Trust Steam Fair. The highlight of this year's fair was the car display, which David Davies, on the Robey Trust board of directors, said was the best display ever. 'We had the best car display I think we have ever had, with more than 70 vintage cars,' he said. 'Everything went well, we had a lot of praise from the fair.' A variety of steam engines were on display for the fair, with five Robey Trust engines, stalls and activities and long queues built up for the tractor and steam roller rides around the town. David said they estimated that around 2,000 people attended the fair, which was less than usual. 'We normally see between 2,000 and 3,000 people, but this time we had nearer 2,000. For these kind of events the weather is critical and Sunday was not too hot and not too cold, but there were other events going on in the area which people may have gone to instead.' He said despite fewer numbers the event was still a success and a 'very important visitor' from the international steam world told him the trust was doing a fantastic job with the fair on an international level with no-one else in the country doing anything similar. David expressed thanks to the Mayor of West Devon and the Tavistock Mayor who opened the fair: 'We are always pleased to see the councillors and people of the town supporting us at these events.'
