PAWNS on the lawn will be the scene in Sticklepath again next weekend as the village gears up for the annual open-air chess festival. The lawn of the National Trust?s Finch Foundry will be the backdrop to the battle of players? wits on Saturday, June 18. The festival is now in its 12th year, and welcomes in addition to the regular players from the West Devon Pub League, newcomers from far and wide who can form teams of four. Players will be competing for the coveted Walter Hicks 125 Rum Trophy, with as usual British grand master and author William Hartson overseeing the event. Anyone wishing to find out more can contact the Devonshire Inn on 01837 840626.
