AN Okehampton College pupil has been selected to swim in the Irish national finals next month. Fourteen-year-old Alex Wooldridge (pictured left) will travel to Lisburn in Northern Ireland to compete against other top swimmers in his age group. Alex, who lives at Sticklepath, has qualified to take part in six different events: 100m and 200m butterfly; 100m and 200m breaststroke; the 400m freestyle and the individual medley. Heats for each of the competitions take place in the morning, with finals in the evening. Alex has been swimming competitively for around 18 months, and swam for the Okehampton Otters before moving on to make Exeter City the main club for which he swims. Alex is a former pupil of South Tawton Primary School, and his training routine now includes one session a week in Okehampton?s pool at the Parklands Centre. Alex?s mother Nicky said her son was looking forward to the finals. ?It is a step up for Alex and he is very excited,? she said.
