Teenagers in South Zeal are among the latest to benefit from a grant provided by Devon County Council from funds allocated from the sale of Exeter International Airport.

A grant of £40,000 has been given to help meet the cost of improvements to the recreation ground in the village. The money will be used to buy new equipment designed for use by young people aged 8 to 14 and provide a safety surface beneath.

The £40,000 was allocated by Hatherleigh and Chagford County Cllr James McInnes from his local projects fund.

He said: 'This 2.5-hectare recreation ground is important to South Zeal residents and I was delighted to support this grant.

'Improving facilities for this age group has been an aspiration of the community for some time, and I'm pleased it is coming together.'

Wendy Redstone, of the South Zeal Recreation Ground Committee, said: 'This grant is a huge boost to our fundraising for this project, which we hope to have in place this summer.

'The recreation ground now boasts a football pitch, tennis courts, a pavilion with changing rooms, kitchen and snooker room, which was rebuilt in 2004; public toilets and a car park.

'A toddler play area was added in 2002 at a cost of £15,000, and the renewal of the main play area has become urgent. The field is a huge asset to the village and we are extremely grateful to Cllr McInnes for sponsoring our bid.'

The council sold Exeter International Airport for £60 million, and after first paying £12-million to cover existing borrowing against their previous investment in the airport, it had £48-million available for local projects.
