A SMALL group of staff and cadets from 2312(Tavistock) Squadron Air Cadets have just returned from an active week at RAF Cosford.

The Tavistock party joined 21 young people from all over Plymouth and Cornwall to take part in activities that included map reading, shooting with small and full bore rifles and sport.

Cadets were also able to use the laser range to practice their marksmanship. A low ropes course was particularly challenging, requiring initiative and physical strength to complete it. The cadets also visited the National Arboretum which they found quite moving.

RAF Cosford trains airmen and women for their roles in the RAF. The cadets visited the Safety Equipment School where ex-cadet David Johnson, was trained 18 months earlier, No 1 Radio School and 238 Squadron where the marshalling of aircraft is taught.

Recreation time was spent bowling, swimming, at the cinema and at an end of camp social.

Squadron CO Flt Lt John Olver, the officer in charge of the camp, said: 'Our camp party was much smaller than usual due to school examinations and Duke of Edinbugh Award expeditions.

'It really was an excellent week. Our cadets each flew twice in Grob Tutor aircraft and once in a Vigilant glider.'

Civilian instructor Shaun Reid helped John to run the camp and has produced a pictorial record of the week.

The squadron welcomes new recruits who must be at least 13 and is also seeking two new officers. Tel 01822 612743 for details.
