A LOCAL school has received an award from the Government for turning itself around after a poor Ofsted report several years ago.

North Tawton is one of only a handful of Devon schools to receive the 'School Achievement Award' from the Department of Education and Skills for substantially improved results between 1998 and 2001.

Four years ago, the school was identified as having serious weaknesses but since then it has fought back to the top and its latest Ofsted report was very good.

Headteacher Neil Hallam said the last STATs results were also good particularly in English.

'This is an accolade for the whole school and for the hard work and dedication of the teaching and support staff,' he said.

Exbourne Primary has also received a school achievement award in recognition of excellent results in key stage two tests. Staff and governors were praised for their hard work in improving results.

l Artwork by pupils of North Tawton Primary has been chosen for an exhibition at the Phoenix Centre in Exeter.
