A UNIQUE charity with a special mission will dare fundraisers to brave an abseil off Meldon Viaduct later this month. The Wedding Wishing Well Foundation's latest fundraiser takes place at the viaduct on Saturday, May 17. Founded in 2012 by Naomi Thomas, the foundation has one very special mission: to fund and organise weddings for couples affected by terminal and life limiting illnesses. Naomi said: 'I don't think people can fully appreciate just how difficult it is for a couple affected by illness to even think about marriage, let alone afford it. The financial burdens of a long-term illness can be overwhelming.' Naomi knows better than most just how devastating a terminal illness can be — in 2009, when she was just 26 years old, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. A year later, following a gruelling regime of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, the cancer returned and Naomi received the heartbreaking news that her cancer was no longer curable. 'Our son Devon was just six days old and my fiancé Graham and I had been putting our wedding off for over a year. It seemed that we were destined to never be married.' Luckily for the couple a local wedding planner came to hear of their story and stepped forward to offer her assistance. With the help of some very generous suppliers, not to mention Sam's hard work and determination, Naomi and Graham enjoyed the wedding of their dreams in June 2012. It was a day Naomi had feared would never happen. 'My wedding meant everything to me,' said Naomi: 'I could finally say that I'd married my soul mate, and I was desperate to help other couples to feel the same way I did. 'Everyone deserves to be happy, and to marry the love of their life. 'It leaves so many wonderful memories for everyone involved, too — it's about a special day for the couple, their family, and friends, as well as giving them time to enjoy married life before it's too late.' The Meldon fundraiser on May 17 runs from 10.30am to 2.30pm. Entry costs £20 with all fees and sponsorship money donated directly to the charity. The abseil is open to anyone over the age of six.
