GET Royal! All would-be Okehampton Carnival queens, princes and princesses can cast aside their daily attire and don something sequined and regal.

To achieve this crowning glory all potential 'blue bloods' have to do is be selected by their 'subjects' at a special dance at the Conservative Club on Friday, September 7.

Everyone who comes to the dance, organised by the carnival committee, gets a vote to pick the queen and the prince and princess of their choice. Music is being provided by Mayfair — a duo who run Millennium Music in the Arcade. Tickets are £5, which includes the buffet.

The only rules for the contestants are that the prince and princess must be of primary school age and enter as a pair, and the carnival queen must be 14 or over.

Entry forms can be obtained from carnival committee chairman Margaret Sage at 6, Castle Road, Okehampton. Tel 54732.

'We have a float for the royals and the committee is willing to help. There is also a clothing grant for all the regalia,' said Mrs Sage.

'We hope that helping with the float and costume will encourage plenty of entries. Who ever is picked will represent Okehampton on Carnival Day and also visit other carnivals in the area,' she said.

The Okehampton carnival, which takes place on Saturday, October 20, has been going more than 30 years and is a tradition townspeople love.

'There is something going on all day long which you don't get in a lot of towns,' said Mrs Sage.

The money raised by the carnival will go to local charities.
