TAVISTOCK Golf Club?s record in the Palairet (the Club championship of Devon) is second to none, and very rarely it fails to reach the quarterfinals. This year they had a bye in the first round, and travelled to Staddon Heights for their second round match against Thurleston.

The 2001 pairing of Graham Ruth and Alan Gawman put the first marker on the board winning by 2 holes.

Willie Reed and Colin George lost at the eighteenth before John Gynne and R Steer restored their lead. Rob Brockington and Kenny McKenzie lost 4 and 3, and then crucially George Gawman and Simon Gilder were beaten 3 and 2. This has been a rare failure in this competition, and all will be wishing to make amends in 2004.

In the midweek Stableford, there was a super result for Philip Gawman, who sent a message to all that he was back. Finishing second behind Martin Greening was a great boost for his confidence, but not for his handicap.

Result: 1. M J Greening 41 points; 2. P Gawman 40; 3. A Finnegan 39; 4. D Burge 39. The results in the medal were: Division 1: 1, M Apps nett 67; 2, A Finnegan 67; 3, R Potts 68. Division 2: 1, A Waddle 63; 2, D Bryant 67; 3, B Duffield 68. Division 3: 1, M Western 64; 2, R Thurgill 69; 3, P Kelly 69. The juniors were in action with Sam Webster winning the H L Smith Trophy (54 handicap and below), beating Adam Waddle into second place. For over 54 handicap players Ryan Kempe was triumphant ahead of P Waddle.
