GUESTS at the official opening of a Celtic roundhouse at Cookworthy Forest on Saturday dressed up as Celtic tribes for the occasion. The event took place within the roundhouse, mainly due to the wet weather. Traditional storytelling by South West Forest?s community education ranger Kate Dixon kept the assembly entertained while warming themselves around a central fire. South West Forest celebrated the completion of the roundhouse which has involved more than 200 volunteers during the past three years. South West Forest woodland project officer Jim White said:?To see young and old alike come and learn and apply a new skill, working alongside others and handling locally sourced, natural minerals to aid in the construction of the roundhouse has been a truly inspirational process.? The aim is to use the completed roundhouse as an outdoor classroom as well as a learning resource. Activities using plant dyes and preparation of forest-based foods are planned. It is hoped to provide a full programme of attractive learning opportunities for schools and the wider community, eager to learn about life in pre-Roman Britain.
