THE atmosphere was buzzing as hundreds of people poured into the streets of Callington yesterday (Wednesday), to enjoy the traditional Honey Fair.

Callington Lions welcomed a record number of stallholders, with 90 stands offering everything from toys to books and honey products.

Visitors tucked into honey cream teas, went on the fairground rides and listened to the 15 town criers from across the South West battle it out in the annual town criers' competition.

More than 800 schoolchildren took part in the art competition, which had the same theme —'Messing about on the River' and 'A Day at the Fair' — as 30 years ago, when the Lions took over the event.

Many of the shops in town were decorated for the shop window contest.

There were also fortune tellers, clowns, street entertainers and travelling musicians.

Lion David Jones said: 'Come rain or shine everyone turns out for honey fair.

'It's as good as ever and we are expecting between 2,000 and 3,000 people here today.'
