THE Dartmoor Pony Heritage Trust and a pony owner from Chagford are joining forces with YHA to offer a unique family-friendly experience this summer.

Starting from Postbridge, one of the trust's guides will show visitors Bronze Age archaeology on the high moorland and explain why Dartmoor ponies are an integral part of the moorland landscape.

After the walk, visitors will go to Bellever Youth Hostel to enjoy a cream tea. At the hostel there will often be the opportunity to meet a pair of Dartmoor driving ponies, Skylark and Stonechat, owned by Sue Parrott, of Chagford.

Clare Stanton, a volunteer for the charity from Chagford, said: 'This is a great day out for local people and visitors, families or organised groups, to go up to Bellever on Dartmoor for a free walk to learn more about the world on Dartmoor and its ponies, followed by a superb cream tea.'

Curt and Regine Full from Germany took part in one of the DPHT's walks in 2011. Curt said: 'YHA Dartmoor is a lovely hostel in a beautiful location. The highlight of our stay was the walk around Bellever Tor with the pony trust. The guide was very knowledgeable and spoke so clearly we understood everything.'

The walks are available most Sundays from July 22 to August 19. You can book a place by contacting Garry Hayman at Bellever Youth Hostel, either by e-mailling [email protected]">[email protected] or calling 01822 880227.
