FANTASTIC fun for all the family — that's the forecast for a special community event being staged in Tavistock town centre this weekend.

The event, to include music, refreshments, crafts and activities, is being hosted by Tavistock Round Table in conjunction with the Meadows Makeover Group — set up this summer with the aim of rejuvenating the town's play park to make it the best in the west.

The community fun day this Sunday, September 29, will start and end with performances by popular local band Orangutan Wheelbarrow and three other groups, The Avatars, The Hit Men and Georgia May, will also take to the stage, specially erected on Bedford Square.

Also on the square will be a variety of crafts, face painting, a temporary tattoo bar, a barbecue and bar, and a bouncy castle on the church green. The Round Table will also be on hand with their famous bacon baps.

Inside the town hall there will be more than 30 stalls, activities and games and activities for the youngest children in the special baby and toddler area.

There will be a fire engine on the square, dance displays, Tavi Twirlers will be there with their batons, and a huge raffle with an array of great prizes donated by local businesses, which include a £300 telescope, beauty treatments and tickets to Plymouth Argyle.

Keri Pierce, of the Meadows Makeover Group, said: 'This is basically our launch event since we started the group up about two months ago and it's turned into a massive community event, which is lovely.

'This is our first event but we've already booked the Methodist Church on November 30 for a Christmas craft sale and children's second-hand clothes sale, and we are trying to put on a retro '70s Christmas disco on December 14 — we just need to find a venue!'

Keri said all money raised by the community fun day will go towards the group's first fundraising target — £12,000 — to pay for a zip-wire to be erected in the Meadows. Ultimately, the group hopes to raise enough to build a new, enclosed toddler play area and an improved central play area.

The members are working with the town council on the project — Keri said the response from the public to the group's creation, reported in the Times during the summer, had been 'incredible', with more than a thousand members joining the Facebook group within three days.

'It's brilliant how everyone is backing it — and it all came from a group of friends just chatting in the park!' she said.

Simon Windsor, chair of Tavistock Round Table, said: 'We are delighted to be able to support this, and forthcoming Meadows Makeover events.

'Most of us have children who use, or have used, the park and what's more, some of our members remember the current equipment being installed many years ago.

'The Round Table assists many local causes and when the Meadows Group approached us with their idea we decided to offer up our support, expertise and services in order to bolster the campaign and help the efforts to provide the town with a new and engaging play area.'

The fun day runs from noon until 6pm — all welcome.
