THE ninth Tavistock Christmas Day free meal was a huge success with a total of 77 people enjoying a home cooked meal.

The meal was held in Tavistock's Lower Deck Café and was made possible thanks to the band of dedicated volunteers and generous donations from Tavistock Lions Club, Tavistock Abbeyfield, Abbey Surgery, Tavistock Area Support Services and numerous members of the community.

The Rev Roger Cornish said: 'There were 77 people, of all ages, who sat down to a fantastic meal prepared by our chef Dan Scott.

'The day went well, without a hitch and everyone was given a bag of goodies to take home. Transport, for anyone who required it, was once again provided by Tavistock Area Support Services and their drivers Dave and Chris.

'So many people volunteered to help that a few had to be turned away but there was room for more guests.'

The café, open every Friday from 10am to 2pm, has been awarded £2,000 from the Co-operative Community Membership Fund to improve the kitchen facilities and replace some tables.

David Stanbury, speaking on behalf of the Co-op's Community Fund, said: 'I am delighted we were able to support the community work of Tavistock United Reformed Church which both houses Tavistock Foodbank and provides free Christmas Day meals.

'All the money in the fund has been donated by our generous members. They deserve all the credit.'
