NOW that the Scots have decided that they wish to remain part of the United Kingdom there are some very important decisions to be made that affect us. The Barnett formula currently has government spending of over £1,600 per head per year more for a Scotsman than a Devonian. Even Lord Barnett, the author of the formula, is embarrassed to be associated with it and is calling for a more equitable solution. Lord Barnett has been quoted as saying 'It is grossly unfair that Scotland should receive more money than the regions of England or Wales when that decision is not based on actual need.' There is also the thorny issue of Scottish MPs voting on English issues whereas the Scottish Assembly alone deals with many Scottish ones. When considering your vote at the next General Election in May ask each candidate for an assurance that they will only vote for a budget which gives a fair share of the cake to Devon.
