A SOUTH Zeal shop owner is hoping to set up a computer club so villagers with a desire to become computer literate can get the expertise they need.

A computer for community use has recently been installed in the tea rooms of The Stores as part of the IntraCom Project, an initiative set up by Devon County Council in association with West Devon Borough Council and parish councils.

The project has established 20 such computer sites in Devon to help the young and old alike to experience the benefits of using computers.

Chris Law from The Stores said it was only early days but 10-12 regulars were already using the computer and he hoped a lot more would come along.

'I am very optimistic about the scheme,' he said. 'It is great to have it here so people can have a go.

'They can learn about computers without having to spend about £1,000 buying one.'

Mr Law said there was so much hype about the internet all the time, especially on television, that people were starting becoming curious and wanting to be involved.

'We would like to develop a computer club so there will be a core of people who can help others to learn about computers and using the internet,' he said.

From using the computer residents can find out how to e-mail friends and colleagues, run a business, gain help with homework, assist local groups and create a website among other things.

Mr Law said the computer was available whenever the shop was opened and he hoped that some evening sessions could be held if a computer club was set up.
