South Zeal played host to its annual classic car and motorbike show on Saturday.

There was a great display of vehicles on display outside the Oxenham Arms and at the village’s primary school, including a Mustang, a classic MG, a Triumph Spitfire, a Robin Hood Super Spec complete with titanium plated stainless steel bodywork and several classic motorbikes, including a 1961 Royal Enfield Cafe Racer Dream Machine owned by Barry Stephens.

The restoration of the bike was 18 months work for classic British bike restorer John Eggleston.

The most eye-catching car on display was an incredible 2015 Volkswagen XL1 with butterfly wing doors owned by Ed Stratton from Winkleigh.

Despite its unusual looks, the SEV (super efficient vehicle) is not a concept car or a prototype but one of 250 built, of which 200 were sold to the public.

The XL1 is the world’s most aerodynamic and most fuel-efficient production car. Its lightweight carbon fibre body, aluminium suspension, magnesium gearbox and wheels and ceramic brakes add up to make the car weigh less than the battery inside a Tesla.

A full tank of petrol can cover 688 miles — enough to drive from London to Newcastle and back and can also be driven on electric power alone.

The car was created to develop new technology and producton techniques that would enable mainstream VW cars to be more fuel-efficient.
