WHEN the idea of the railway extension to Tavistock was first suggested we immediately had a bunch of parish councillors from Bere Alston telling us what sort of service our town should have.

Now the subject of the railway has come up again and we have a lady from Gunnislake also attempting to interfere by suggesting that we should only have a shuttle service to Bere Alston.

Tavistock is a fairly large town and is likely to get larger if all the proposed houses are built, if people are to commute to Plymouth the last thing they want to do on a cold wet winter's morning is to mess about changing trains just to suit the relatively small population of Gunnislake.

While we are on the subject of railways, about a month ago I wrote to this paper asking our town and borough councillors to tell us exactly what is happening about the building proposals and what we are likely to end up with. So far there has not been a peep from any of them — is there something they do not want the people they are supposed to represent to know about?
