FIRE crews from Tavistock, a line rescue crew from Plymouth and the air ambulance were called out to rescue an elderly man who fell down Lydford Gorge on Tuesday afternoon.

The crews were called out to the National Trust site near Okehampton shortly after 2pm when a 92-year-old visitor from Westward Ho! plunged about 100ft into the gorge.

The man was taken by air ambulance to Derriford Hospital after being carried out of the gorge on a stretcher. He was treated for head injuries, bruising and shock.

Station officer Tony Clarke described the rescue as difficult because of the steepness of the ground and said it was made worse by the heat and having to rotate the crews on the rescue lines.
