CAMPAIGNERS from Tavistock will be taking part in a nationwide 24-hour demonstration for greater justice in world trade later this month.
The lobbying will begin at 12 noon on Friday June 27 and end at 12 noon the following day, when the Tavistock campaigners will link with thousands of others across the UK in the first-ever simultaneous nationwide lobby event.
The campaign, which aims to see every MP in the UK lobbied in their constituency, has been organised by the Trade Justice Movement, an alliance of more than 60 organisations.
Tavistock campaigner Hilary Johnson said events have been planned by the movement to put pressure on the UK government in the run up to the World Trade Organisation ministerial meeting, due to take place in Mexico in September.
She said the campaigners will be meeting West Devon and Torridge MP John Burnett on Friday June 27.
?Trade rules have the potential to reduce poverty and protect the environment,? said Hilary.
?We are calling on Mr Burnett to use his influence to make sure that the UK government takes a lead in re-writing unfair world trade rules at the important World Trade Organisation meeting this September.?
As part of the ?24 Hours for Trade Justice? there will be a fair trade stall at Tavistock Farmers? Market on Saturday June 28.
The campaign will culminate at noon with a silent protest in Bedford Square, when campaigners will be invited to raise a set of scales above their heads. Scales have been a symbol of the campaign for greater justice in world trade since it was launched in 2001.
