A BUILDING which has acted as an educational resource since 1870 has been officially re-opened for the 21st Century — as an adventure centre for young people.
As national director of the Outward Bound Trust Sir Michael Hobbs performed the opening ceremony of the Throwleigh Centre recently he described it as a place where many young people would be inspired to fulfil their potential.
Originally a primary school until 1970 when it was closed due to local education re-organisation, the building opened again in 1995 as a bunk house and was used by many local colleges as an outward bound centre.
David Baker, one of the driving forces behind the project, said the establishment of an outdoor pursuits centre in this part of Dartmoor National Park at a cost of £160,000 was the fulfilment of many years hard work.
As well as running adventure activity courses and Duke of Edinburgh Award courses, the centre is also available for use by other youth groups and for art and craft groups.
A wide range of outdoor activities from country rambling to camping and field studies can be enjoyed from the centre.
The renovated stone building comprises a large room ideal for meeting and dining and for the hungry adventurer there is a well-equipped kitchen, with three bunk rooms providing sleeping accommodation for up to 30 ramblers.
A cash boost from the South West Regional Development Agency of £12,000 has significantly helped the project.
Other funding partners include Devon County Council and the National Lotteries Charity Board.
The Throwleigh Centre did not get off to the best start earlier this year, when a few weeks into opening activities stopped because of the foot and mouth crisis.
Mr Baker said all the advanced bookings had to be cancelled: 'We were brand new and had no reserves of cash we could call upon so it was very difficult,' he said.
'We are seeking another £4,000 from the Regional Development Agency which will put us on course to move forward.'
