Look of Lidl store wins approval from planners
Thursday, 30 July 2009
THE design of the new Lidl supermarket on Tavistock’s Plymouth Road was last week given the green light by planners.
The store, which will include 70 car parking spaces, will be situated on the prominent southern entrance to the town, which is part of the World Heritage Site.
Planning officer Ed Persse told West Devon Borough Council’s planning committee that the design of the store was contemporary, with a curved, ‘wavesque’ roof.
‘It’s not the usual Lidl design, they’ve made great efforts to try and design something that enhances the area. I am entirely happy with what is proposed,’ he said.
Mr Persse said the opportunities for ‘soft landscaping’ were limited, but it was proposed to plant two mature trees within the car park which, when fully grown, would reach a height of up to seven-and-a-half metres.
The store building would be situated at the northern end of the site, with railings on the road side, said Mr Persse.
Store advertising signs extending above roof level were expressly excluded from the conditions of planning consent, he added.
Oliver McGuinness, spokesman for Lidl, said the company had worked closely with West Devon’s planning officers to try and come up with an acceptable design for its new store.
He said Lidl would continue to be in close contact with West Devon’s landscape officer regarding the most appropriate species of tree for the site.
Lidl was granted reserved matters planning consent, subject to conditions including completion of landscaping prior to the store opening and an additional condition requiring that the tree specification be agreed in advance with planners.
