No rain on their parade!
Friday, 24 July 2009
COLLECTIVE crossing of fingers by members of Tavistock Lions Club must have paid off last Saturday, as the rain stayed firmly in the heavens for the culmination of this year’s carnival.
Crowds of people lined the streets of the town to watch the procession of floats and threw their loose change into the collecting buckets.
Tavistock Lions Club spokesman Steve Grummitt said: ‘We were very pleased and relieved it stayed dry — people put so much work into their floats and we were very pleased with the response of everyone to the carnival this year.’
The collection on the procession route, which took 21 people just under two-and-a-half hours to count, amounted to £2,515.67 — made up from 75,743 coins.
‘We also collected one gold wrist bracelet — it obviously fell off when someone was donating money into one of the collecting buckets,’ said Steve.
‘I imagine it’s probably a gents bracelet — it’s quite chunky.’
The bracelet will be handed to Tavistock Police Station if it is not claimed by the end of the week.
Steve Grummitt can be contacted on 01822 615526 for more details.
Steve said the rest of carnival week went as planned — the weather for the jazz night was bad so only the ‘jazz stalwarts’ were brave enough to attend, but the other events, including the fun day in the Meadows, attracted good crowds.
The pavement artists competition was the one of the best ever, and the concert in the church, featuring Stannary Brass Band, was a tremendous success, said Steve.
‘Overall, we’ve been very pleased with the results this year, the floats were of a very high quality and it was great to see more walking entries — they tend to give participants more chance to interact with the crowd than they do on floats,’ said Steve.
All the proceeds from the carnival will be distributed amongst the charities, clubs and schools that participated in the proecession and other events during carnival week.
Next year’s theme will be ‘Let’s Celebrate’ and carnival day will be on Saturday July 17.
