Tavistock Carnival 2012
Wednesday, 11 July 2012
SUNDAY - FUN DAY IN THE MEADOWS HAS SADLY BEEN CANCELLED DUE TO BAD WEATHER
Tavistock’s Carnival Week starts this coming Saturday and the Lions are certain that the programme has something for all ages and musical tastes. The first music event, Summer Sounds is this coming Saturday in the Town Hall and has been arranged on behalf of the Lions by Jude Rotton and his group Orangutan Wheelbarrow. One of the other bands that had been scheduled to play was Tavistock College Jazz Band but due to a very recent family bereavement, they will not now be appearing. Jude is hopeful that, in the short time available, he will be able to find another group to take part in what will be a great evening of rock and acoustic music.
The culmination of the week’s programme is the grand procession on Saturday 21st July when the theme will be “Great Britain” so plenty of red, white and blue. It’s still not too late to enter a float or a walking entry and any organisation or group of friends wishing to take part should contact the procession coordinator on 01822 610858.
The Lions Club of Tavistock
Formed in 1976, The Lions Club of Tavistock has raised over 300,000 for distribution to a wide range of local organisations and community groups. A regular sight around the area in our bright red shirts (see the Lions photo below), the Club is one of thousands of member clubs within Lions International, the largest voluntary service organisation in the world, with over 1.4 million members.
The Tavistock Club organises a range of activities throughout the year in addition to Carnival Week, such as the annual Firework Spectacular, a Christmas Draw which supports children’s organisations in the Tavistock area and the incredibly successful Trees of Light in December.
The Trees of Light, where loved ones can be remembered on the Christmas Trees that adorn Tavistock Town Hall throughout December, have raised approaching £65,000 since they were started, which has been given to organisations such as Marie Curie Cancer Care Support and Children’s Hospice South West.
While Lions Clubs tend to concentrate on fund raising for their local community, the Club in Tavistock also often donates to the Lions Club International Foundation (LCIF), which is involved with relief efforts all over the world, especiallly where there has been a major disaster, such as the recent Japanese earthquake.
Among local organisations to receive significant support from the Lions in Tavistock during recent years are: Tavistock Hospital; Tavistock Bowling Club; Children’s Hospice South West; St Luke’s Hospice; Crowndale Recreation Association; Tavistock Area Mencap; Mary Budding Trust; Tavistock Youth Cafe; West Devon Domestic Violence Unit; Devon Air Ambulance; Taviskate; Youth Football Clubs; Youthwise; RNLI; NSPCC
