Lakeside Residential Home
Lakeside Residential Home at Lower Maddaford is a private family run home, situated a few miles from Okehampton and is registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and has been rated (two star good) web site www.lakesidecarehome.co.uk Lakeside lies within extensive landscaped grounds including lawns, flowerbeds, and lakes with a footpath perimeter. The lakes are surrounded by natural meadows and woodland, home to some of Devon’s rarest and most beautiful flora and fauna. All this is set in glorious rolling countryside and has far reaching views with Dartmoor National Park as a majestic backdrop. We have 29 en-suite bedrooms, 20 on the ground floor, and 8 on the first floor, 4 accessed by a stair lift and 4 by passenger lift. Most enjoy a superb outlook either across the lakes, some with their own patios, or over the Devon countryside towards Dartmoor’s highest western tors. We endeavour to make Lakeside a home from home. To this end we offer a rich mix of stimulating activities, entertainment and outings in our own mini bus. Our chef cooks and prepares good fresh food, using quality ingredients sourced locally whenever possible. We can of course cater for special dietary needs.
Yelverton Nursing Home
The Yelverton Nursing and Residential Home is a 33 bedded Home. We care for residential and nursing residents and also care for residents and their relatives who need a period of respite. We pride ourselves on the homely atmosphere at the Home and everyone is welcome. Activities are a large part of life at the Yelverton. We have a volunteer who offers nail care including varnishing and brings her small dog to see the residents and another volunteer who also comes with her larger, lovely dog. Interact visit weekly and residents may join in with this activity which helps with manual dexterity and memory recollection. The Home has its own activity co-ordinator who offers a range of activities. One to one time is offered to those residents who prefer not to join in with group activities. Richard visits every other week and plays his guitar and electric organ and sings for the residents. Jo comes to the Home on a Tuesday and offers her hairdressing services and we also have regular visits from Philip the chiropodist. This month we have 2 additional activities planned, we have our bi- annual meal at The Rock Inn and we have an afternoon show planned called ‘A night at the Musicals’ which will be performed by The Olive Tree Theatre group. Venn House
Venn House is set in large landscaped gardens where residents enjoy walks, with accommodation in either the Jacobean Mansion wing or the Coach House. A move to a care home can seem daunting at first, but rest assured, registered manager Sandie Baskerville and the dedicated staff team will ensure your stay is as enjoyable and relaxed as possible and you can be safe in the knowledge you have chosen a ‘premium’ home in the West Devon area. Good home cooking is provided by our cooks Carol and Sue, including home made cakes from the Aga plus special diets are catered for. We look forward to you viewing our ‘special home’ at anytime and we also invite you to spend the day with us, to take lunch as our guest and see what we have to offer first hand. Venn House is rated a ‘Good Home’ by the Care Quality Commission.

Homemade Wills v Professionally Drawn Wills
Many people consider that the cost of obtaining a professionally drawn Will is an unnecessary expense when you can pick up a kit whilst doing your weekly shop. However, many people do not realise that what may initially appear to be cheap can end up costing their Estate tens of thousands of pounds to rectify if it goes wrong. Several Homemade Wills fail at the first hurdle in that they have not been correctly executed. For a Will to be valid there are strict requirements that must be adhered to. If a Will is found to be invalid the law dictates who inherits the Estate. This can mean that relatives the deceased did not originally intend to benefit inherit the Estate. There have also been cases where the deceased purchased a Will making kit but it did not materialise until after the persons death that the kit was designed for Scottish Law and not English Law, so the Will was invalid. Another common issue is that one of the witnesses to the homemade Will is either a beneficiary of the Will or related to a beneficiary of the Will. The effect of this is that the beneficiary cannot inherit from the Estate. With this in mind, the beneficiary would probably have preferred you sought professional advice concerning your Will and received a few pounds less from your Estate than receiving nothing at all. Finally, many homemade Wills fail to deal with all of the deceased’s assets. This is because legal definitions often differ from the more common Oxford English dictionary definitions specifically in order to avoid interpretation issues. Where a Will fails to deal with all of the assets in the Estate, the undisposed of assets are dealt with on a partial intestacy. This is by no means a comprehensive list of the result a homemade Will could have on an Estate but when you compare the cost in dealing with mistakes like these, and the delay they cause to the administration of an Estate, the cost of obtaining a professionally drawn Will can be relatively cheap in comparison.
