Raising awareness of community transport in Okehampton

By Sally Shipton in Community News

A CHARITY transport group in Okehampton is hosting an event for people to learn about the transport services available on Saturday (June 17), as part of Community Transport Awareness Week.

Okehampton and District Transport Group will be at the Co-operative car park in Market Street Okehampton between 9am and noon.

Community transport is provided by charitable organisations and is available for the many people, especially in rural Devon, that may live miles from the nearest bus route, or are unable to afford taxi fares or are physically unable to use the public transport services provided.

Okehampton and District Community Transport group can provide transport to health appointments, services, shops and leisure activities where no transport or no suitable transport is available.

A spokesperson for Okehampton and District Community Transport Group said: ‘Our Community Transport Awareness Roadshow aims to raise the awareness of the value and variety of community transport services available in your local area. We look forward to welcoming you to learn more about the transport options available, which you may not need today, but maybe you know of a family member of neighbour that could do with some help.’

A user of the Ring and Ride bus scheme said: ‘Just to say how much I have appreciated all your hard work over the past year. I have made new friends and found a new lease of life.’

A user of the Volunteer Car Scheme said: ‘I want to pass on my thanks to the two volunteer drivers who have driven my wife and I to the RD&E on separate occasions earlier this month. Both of these gentlemen were kind and helpful to a fault.

‘It was a great comfort, at a time when I was in poor health and unable to drive myself to the hospital, to be able to use their voluntary services.

‘The Okehampton and District Community Transport group provides an invaluable benefit to the community it serves so well and it is such a comfort to know that I can call on the service it provides at a time of need.’
